Drivers line up for gas war spoils
Monday, October 06, 2008
The Sun Times -- Owen Sound, Ontario, the retail gas price capital of Canada.

That seemed to be the case during a weekend price war between four stations on the 16th Street East strip -- Zehrs at the Pumps, Pioneer, Canadian Tire and Sunoco.

The price for the cheapest unleaded gas dropped as low as 83.8 cents per litre on Saturday afternoon before shooting back up to the $1.05 range.

"People were lined up on the road yesterday," an employee at Sunoco, who did not want to be identified, said in an interview on Sunday.

Yup, gas has dropped ~10 cents/day the last 3 days in Dayton! I'm loving that stuff!

But unlike what some people fear, I WILL NOT immediately start driving a whole bunch more, and kicking my gas usage way up.

gas buddy is great for finding the lowest price. then the savings must be looked at to see if the trip is worth the savings. our low is just to far away to make the trip, so the next lowest price has to do. our low is $3.35 a gallon. much better than the $4.15 one station jumped to and got into a gouging investigation with the state. the price dropped real fast when the report hit the news. The fuel logbook is also great for keeping track of your usage.

Gas is selling for as low as $2.99/gallon in Dayton, OH...and thus far there's no lines. I pulled right up to the pump this morning.

The price of oil dropped over $5 yesterday and the price of gas dropped to around $1.05 this morning. BUT-the price of oil has gone up over $3 this morning so my guess is that gas will increase at least 4 cents at midnight, unless the direction changes, again.

Funny hblee, but I'm in Tor. East & Sunoco's here match or sometimes exceed (one station in particular regularly) the prices of other co's. Surprised they were in a gas war, my closest Sunoco is the one always marginally (.5+ cents/L) higher than others - hence not a regular customer of Sunoco. On top of that, their prem is often higher than other stations - but they do supply 1-2 octane more than most.

Dakota4x4 has some good idea, but I like the 1/2 tank. I have also noticed that most price hikes occur on Wed and Thur, so buy on Tuesday or before 6 am on Wednesday.

We need some of that here. Petro Canada and Shell have the highest prices
and they never seem to budge. Of the other big names, only Sunoco and Ultramar seem to keep their prices below the bigger names.

I agree with Dakota4x4. I fill my tank when it gets on 1/2. I can go for 2 weeks on 1/2 a tank, and instead of it costing $100-$150 to fill up, it only costs me $50-$60 dollars.

I used to hate those gas wars, I was a manager of a c-store at that time, dang sometimes we had to change prices 6 to 8 times a day, it was stupid. I certainly hope it doesn't happen in Lubbock Texas

Great example of desensitization of rediculous overinflated pricing. Fuel goes up $1.50/gallon, comes back down 50 cents, and people rejoice! (Sorry I didn't convert numbers for our Canadian friends to litres)

it's ppl like this that cause price spikes... this is dumb... too many ppl wait until their tank is on E to fill up... I top off my tank every 2-3 work days... that way I'm never below 3/4 of a tank at any one time... and when there is a price spike, I can drive up to two weeks on a tank...

I realize some ppl drive more, but the same priciple holds true, top off every day when you see a good price, and if there is a spike in price or demand, you can go 1-3 days without filling up... less panic, less stress at the pump, less panic buying...

"Back in the day", gas wars took the price down to 9 cents per gallon... but that was a different time and a different place... and, as a nation, we were not so addicted to oil...

Now, we must kick that addiction if we are to survive

The majority of our gas stations aren't within eyeshot of each other. So we don't have any knock down drag out gas wars out here in the middle of the Mojave Desert!

Humm, 83.8 cents times 3.8 litre is $3.18 a gallon. That is cheaper than here.

Gas wars are good. The companies are fighting for the most customers and more profits in a slow market.

Ah yes, I remember the good ole' days of gas station price wars. Doesn't happen here anymore. Consolidation of retail outlets, and lawsuits, stopped that.
