Texans start to pull back at the pump
Tuesday, July 08, 2008
The Houston Chronicle -- Texas motorists seem to be reining in their driving after months of bucking the national trend.

State gasoline tax collections reported in June indicated taxes fell for two months in a row after a streak of gains earlier this year even as prices inched toward $4 a gallon, according to data from the Texas Comptroller's office.

While state officials and others note that a number of factors figure in gasoline demand, the recent downturn suggests higher fuel prices are beginning to weigh more heavily on Texas drivers.

"Wonder if Texans wish their state was smaller, with gas being so outrageous these days. :)"

That's a good point. Some of us in the western states cannot cut back as much as people in other places. For example, I'm responsible for the Dallas/Fort Worth section of my business, and have to travel it extensively. Our cities our newer and we have a lot of land, so they built around the automobile when oil was cheap.

I'm lucky in that I live in central Dallas, two blocks away from a light rail station. I very seldom use the car unless it's work related, but I cannot use any form of mass transit in my job. I've cut back as much as I possibly can, and most others I know have done the same thing.

I would love to live in a more compact urban area, though. It's just not the reality here. I think we'll see a reverse "white flight" in coming years. A mass migration back to the city. The poor will be forced out into the suburbs where there are no jobs for them and no mass transit, either. This has already been happening in Austin for a while, not so much because of high gas prices but because of traffic (only two major freeways and no crosstown thoroughfares).

Everyone is hurting. Its taken city leaders way to long, to add more Metro buses. There really isn't much MASS transit as there seems to be in say, New York, or even Detroit, in place here.

They finally get around to adding a few more buses and WoW, amazing how fast the park and ride filled up. People need to have option of using em'. Just think if they added about 50 more buses.

T. Boone Pickens, big rich oil man, is going to test out wind farms. Thats fine and well, but what about transmission and distrubition ????

Texas will get on the band wagon after gasoline prices hit

"Congress is evil for not letting Americans drill in America."

And the oil corps that own leases on millions of acres in the Gulf that aren't being drill on?? Oh, they're the "Good Guys", right?

Prices go up (also taxes go up) tax revenue goes down, it is that simple. Ronald Reagan was correct, trickle down works, with spending cuts (which he did not get).

Congress is evil for not letting Americans drill in America.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that we all should conserve gas by consolidating trips, no matter what the price is.

The U.S. Congress is flat out betraying us as a country by not allowing us to drill for our own oil - right here in the USA.

I say -Vote the B******s OUT in November. Party doesn't matter. Throw them all to the curb by voting for new faces that will protect our country from this price gouging and speculation by letting us provide our own oil.

I'll know my home state is serious about "pulling back at the pump" when I read reports of used-car lots overflowing with pickup trucks which city folks have unloaded at fire-sale prices. As long as the pickup remains the unofficial state vehicle, any reduction in fuel usage is just a minor blip.

Conservation will not be enough, Iran just fired a bunch of test missles. Which means prices will go up because of fear for their nuclear weapons.

Shouldn't everyone be pulling back as much as possible? Don't most Texas ranches have horses for transportation? Why use gas fed when hay fed will do?
