With Gas Prices Down, Seats Open Up on the Bus
Saturday, November 22, 2008
NY Times -- Soaring gasoline prices were a boon to mass transportation ridership across the country last summer. Subway and bus systems were so crowded, rush hour commuters were forced to stand on the way to work and back home in cities across the country. Parking at bus stops and train stations suddenly was hard to come by. But if the Dallas Area Rapid Transit system is any sign of things to come, commuters are having an easier time of it, as drivers climb back into their cars. What a difference $2.00 gasoline makes.

They are definitely losing riders that are now unemployed and those that have gone back to using their cars.

Cheap gas could cause part of it but as others have pointed out higher unemployment means less people commuting overall so less people on buses too.

No workers, which means no taxes, which means more budget cuts, which means less money for programs and job cuts.......

I agree! It's a no-brainer. We're not using more gas again - more people have no jobs to go to!

We need to keep conserving, but when gas is cheaper than a bus ticket then it doesn't make much sense.

There are actually people out there who think $4/gal gas is a good thing to force mass transit ridership. Of course if you ask them about the economy or areas where mass transit isn't feasible you get the deer in the headlights look.

Then why haven't bus fares lowered proportionately to the
cost of fuel?

My main reason for not using mass transit is that I have a 20 minute drive to work. To take the Via bus, it would take nearly two hours! That is so incredibly inefficient...
